Illinois is officially the first state in the country to offer a specialized legal hotline for the LGBTQ+ community, pushing back on federal anti-LGBTQ+ initiatives and cuts that have jeopardized the safety of many. The new network “Illinois Pride Connect” was recently announced by Gov. J.B. Pritzker who posted a video saying “with all the things that are coming at all of us, for us to be able to go on offense and not be on defense is what I love about this state.”
“The state of Illinois, today I am announcing, is launching a first-of-its-kind legal hotline for LGBTQ individuals across the state. And Illinois is proud to announce it,” Pritzker said. The new hotline will serve as a legal resource for health care, education, immigration, family and elder services and more within the LGBTQ+ community. Those accessing the line will be informed of their rights and how they can seek help.
Hotline callers will be able to seek free and confidential assistance with legal issues such as access to gender-affirming care, discrimination and harassment, Medicaid and SNAP access, identity documentation, housing. or safety concerns, according to Advocate. “Building upon the state’s transgender and gender-diverse wellness and equity project that we launched at the beginning of 2024, we will be the only state, the only state in the entire United States, that provides free legal advice to protect the LGBTQ community,” Pritzker continued.
The hotline is supported by a host of legal and LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations including AIDS Foundation Chicago, Lambda Legal, Illinois Department of Human Services, Equality Illinois and more. So far the state has invested $250,000 in funding to launch the hotline, which will run out of funds next summer. However, the state hopes to expand funding privately after the first year.
The hotline is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. GMT Monday through Thursday at 1-855-805-9200. Services are offered in both Spanish and English. The official hotline website reads: “If you’re an LGBTQIA+ individual (or a concerned family member or friend), and you’re facing legal issues that impact your health, safety, or access to care, we’re here to help.” The site also functions as a database of resources for the LGBTQ+ community and beyond, offering explainers, breakdowns, and important need-to-know documents across various categories.
