Indonesia has censored gay and lesbian emojis from use on social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, LINE, and Whatsapp. The heavily Muslim country removed same-sex couples and the rainbow flag from use, according to the communications and information ministry.
“Such contents are not allowed in Indonesia based on our cultural law and the religious norms and the operators must respect that,” Ismail Cawidu, spokesman for the Communication and Information Ministry, told AFP Friday. “Those things might be considered normal in some Western countries, while in Indonesia it’s practically impossible,” he said.
So far, only LINE has complied with the government’s request. Let’s hope the other companies refuse to remove the harmless, and often uplifting, emojis.
