This Sunday marked the 30th anniversary of the legendary SAGE Toys Party in New York City. What began as a small gathering of friends in a Manhattan apartment has grown to an annual holiday bash, drawing celebrities, politicians, and crowds of over 2,500 LGBTA New Yorkers.
Whoopi Goldberg delivered a powerful and entertaining keynote address, and the event collected over 5,000 toys for the 9th Police Precinct Community Center, Ali Forney Center, Brooklyn ACE Integration Head Start, Camp Felix, God’s Love We Deliver, Grace Baptist/Faith Mission, The Iris House, UWS Jericho Project/Brick Church, and Youth 4 Seniors/Harlem InterAgency Council.
Toys Party founder Robby Browne spoke about the special meaning that the evening has for him:
“I am so proud of what the Toys event has become–a gathering of thousands of people in our community to form a special family of choice for one night in order to give back to the charities that touch our hearts. We provide over 5,000 toys to children in need and it is a blessing to be able to give them joy during the holiday season. Furthermore, SAGE has been such a huge part of my life and I am pleased that all ticket sales benefit this great organization devoted to helping LGBT elders.”
