While strutting the boards in outrageous, high-heeled boots, Billy Porter won a 2013 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He also received a Drama Desk, an Outer Circle, and a Grammy Award for his turn as brassy drag queen Lola in Broadway’s Kinky Boots. This year, the Pittsburgh-born singer, actor, writer, director, and composer released his third album, Billy’s Back on Broadway, and he will soon debut a semi-autobiographical play, While I Yet Live, starring fellow Tony-winner Lillias White, at Off-Broadway’s Primary Stages from September 23-October 31.

Born in 1969, Porter’s dream was cemented when he saw Jennifer Holliday and the Dreamgirls cast perform on the 1982 Tony Awards. Graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a B.F.A. in drama, he made it to Broadway by 1991 in Miss Saigon. Between Broadway gigs, Porter has crafted numerous one-man shows for himself, including 2005’s autobiographical musical, Ghetto Superstar.
