The leader of the Isle of Man, Allan Bell, said that he’s been in a 21-year-long relationship with a man. Although he has never come out publicly, Bell insists that he hasn’t kept his private life in the closet, he just insists that no one has asked. “People know that I’m gay. I’ve never made a secret of it, but no one has ever asked me,” Bell said.
The Isle of Man is located in the Irish sea, and is considered a British Crown Dependency, but is self-governing. It was only in 1992 that homosexuality was decriminalized, but plans are in motion to catch the Isle of Man up with the English-speaking world by introducing same-sex marriage legislation. Bell hopes to introduce a gay and lesbian marriage bill before the end of his 2015-2016 term.
Currently civil unions are given and same-sex marriages performed legally in other parts of the world are recognized.
