While Jamaica has been independent from the UK for 50 years now, it still retains many colonial-era laws including “buggery” laws that, if used, could send a man to prison for ten years for being gay. A gay rights group, JFLAG, is hoping to challenge The Offences Against Persons Act of 1864,which they say not only promotes violence but may be unconstitutional. With the help of the UK’s Human Dignity Trust, JFLAG hopes that it will be able to effectively challenge the Offenses Against Persons Act in the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. [QT]
