At a four hour telethon on Sunday, Marcia Gay Harden revealed that her children are all queer, inspiring her to engage in LGBTQ+ advocacy.
The telethon titled “Drag Isn’t Dangerous” was held on Sunday to raise funds for LGBTQ+ charities in response to a rise in anti-drag legislation across the country. Special guests included Drag Race’s Jinx Monsoon, Candis Cayne and Trixie Mattel, along with movie stars including Charlize Theron and Melissa McCarthy.
Harden told telethon host Adam Shankman “What drives me is – my children are all queer. My eldest child is nonbinary. My son is gay. My youngest is fluid. And you know, they are my kids and they teach me every day.”
Theron also spoke about her daughter who is transgender and asked the public to use the correct pronouns when referring to her. Theron and actress Sarah Silverman want to protect and defend the LGBTQ+ community, with Silverman stating that anyone who comes for drag artists would have to “come through me first.”
Harden condemn anti-LGBTQ+ legislation saying “This is so fear-based and it’s spreading that kind of fear and hatred among other people. I believe this country will fight that.”
The telethon raised over $523,000 in funds for multiple LGBTQ+ charities.
