After a heartbreaking decision by the St. Louis Rams to cut openly gay defensive lineman Michael Sam from not only from their starting roster, but also their practice squad, it seemed like all hope was lost for the player. But Sam received a second chance thanks to a last-minute deal from the Dallas Cowboys yesterday, Sam will join the team’s practice squad. “We feel like he has a chance to come in at a position that we’ve tried to address throughout the off-season, throughout the training camp, and compete for a spot,” Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett said. “The way we view the practice roster is, first and foremost, their job is to help facilitate practice. There’s also a great opportunity for us to develop personnel and evaluate personnel, and this is no different for us.”

After the news hit, Sam quickly changed his Twitter to say “proud Dallas Cowboys defensive end.” Sam still has the opportunity to play in the NFL. Any team is still able to sign him as long as it’s to the team’s active roster. [NYT]
