Things are looking up for LGBT people in America’s heartland as Montana’s governor, Steve Bullock, has signed into law an executive order that will protect LGBT state employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The law will ban discrimination in state agencies, contractors, and subcontractors. The announcement was made on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the governor said he was inspired by the late Dr.’s civil rights work. “I am honored to stand up for all Montanans to ensure that no one is denied full and equal participation in our state’s workforce based on discrimination and intolerance,” he said. “While an executive order applies to state government only I encourage private businesses to examine their policies as well.” [HRC]
