The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) says there will be a total of 111 gay, lesbian or transgender television characters in regular or reoccurring roles appearing on televisions across America, with 31 LGBT characters on scripted shows on the five major networks marking the most ever. The gay characters on TV range in genre from shows Glee and True Blood, that are geared towards a decidedly younger group, to the crime and medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy.

GLAAD’s president, Herndon Graddick says: “More and more Americans have come to accept their LGBT family members, friends, coworkers, and peers, and as audiences tune into their favorite programs, they expect to see the same diversity of people they encounter in their daily lives.” (Reuters). Beyond even the high number of characters on popular shows, basic cable now includes shows focused on gay lifestyle issues such as NBC’s comedy The New Normal, that features a gay couple hoping to have a baby.
