A New Jersey state court judge ruled today that gay and lesbian couples must be allowed to marry. Judge Mary Jacobson ruled that the rights given under the state of New Jersey are inherently unequal to the rights given by the federal government to gay married couples. “The ineligibility of same-sex couples for federal benefits is currently harming same-sex couples in New Jersey in a wide range of contexts,” the judge said. “Same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution,” she wrote.
This ruling is sure to irk Governor Chris Christie who famously vetoed same-sex marriage legislation that was approved by the State Senate and said that he believes gay marriage must be voted on by the people. Despite a majority of Gardern State-ers approving of gay marriage, the Christie administration is expected to appeal the ruling. [NBC]
