The MTA announced that New York City’s subways and busses will use gender-neutral nouns replacing “ladies and gentleman.” The inclusive move will have conductors and pre-recorded messengers say “passengers,” “riders,” and “everyone.”
MTA spokesman Jon Weinstein said: “We’re fundamentally changing the way we talk with riders to give them better and clearer information.”
The news was shared in a nine-page memo that describes how employees must interact with passengers.
