New Zealand lawmakers cast a vote today in favor of same-sex marriage. In an overwhelming majority (80-40), the Parliament erupted in cheers when the votes were cast—setting the tone for the next two votes that must take place to turn the bill into a law. The next stage will take several months and allows for the public to weigh in on the vote. In addition to the strong support in Parliament, polls also show that two-thirds of New Zealanders support gay marriage—a good indication that the bill will ultimately become law. It also has the support of most of the country’s political leaders. WaPo
