It’s been a big few weeks (and year) for LGBT history-making in the sports world. Now, we have news that the Rugby World Cup will be officiated by an openly gay man, for the first time in the sport’s history. Welshman Nigel Owens will referee the match between New Zealand and Australia this week. Nigel famously came out in 2007 on Welsh TV and will be the subject of a BBC documentary next week.
The choice for Owen to ref was a no-brainer. As Selector Grant Fox said that he is “clearly the best referee in the world—he’s demonstrated that.” He also said that the choice was made a while ago. “We knew before this game that he had that job should we get the opportunity to play in [the final],” he said.
