Previously, Seattle has always had a 40-foot rainbow flag hoisted atop the Seattle Space Needle in honor of LGBT Pride Celebrations; however, officials have said that they will not raise a flag this year. According to equal rights activist Stuart Wilber, since Seattle has the second largest LGBT community, the flag symbolized hope and equality that the citizens’ strived for. The owners of the Space Needle have announced, “As we don’t raise any flag but the American flag on a regular basis, there are no plans to raise the Rainbow Flag again this year. We will continue to support equal rights and actively foster these causes as we have in the past.” Nevertheless, last year, the Space Needle owners said that they would not raise the flag unless $50,000 was raised for local LGBT charities and organizations. The goal was achieved and the flag went up. This year, however, hoisting the flag was not even considered. Wilbur respects the corporation’s wishes but says, “I would challenge them to do a challenge for Washington United for Marriage and help them win the battle for marriage equality.” [Q13 Fox]
