Officials in North Carolina may never admit that their anti-gay transgender bathroom bill is both wrong and responsible for a massive backlash against the state (which stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars), and have fired back against the Federal Government’s threat to withhold much-needed funds.
The Justice Department told the state that it still had the choice as to whether to enforce the recently passed law, HB2, or not, and Governor McCrory was asked to report back to the Department today. Instead, it seems that McCrory isn’t going down without a fight. Telling Fox News: “It’s the federal government being a bully. It’s making law…[The Justice Department is] trying to define gender identity, and there is no clear identification or definition of gender identity.”
He’s taking officially further this morning, by announcing that the state has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department. “The Obama administration is bypassing Congress by attempting to rewrite the law and set restroom policies for public and private employers across the country, not just North Carolina,” a statement today said. “This is now a national issue that applies to every state and it needs to be resolved at the federal level. They are now telling every government agency and every company that employs more than 15 people that men should be allowed to use a women’s locker room, restroom or shower facility.”
According to CBS:
In his filing, McCrory cited the fact that he has directed state agencies to make a reasonable accommodation of a single occupancy restroom. The state also allows private companies to set their own policies for bathrooms, locker rooms and shower facilities.”
Seriously McCrory, there must be more pressing issues to focus your energy on than who uses which bathroom. [CBS]
