The pasta pot is boiling hot as customers and gay-rights activists criticize anti-gay statements by Guido Barilla, the fourth-generation namesake and chairman of the world’s largest pasta company. Now, other pasta companies are piping up and showing their support for families of all sorts, primarily through social media.
Ronzoni responded to a fan post on Facebook with the following message:
“Just like pasta, we believe families come in all different shapes, sizes, colors and orientations. We feel it is important to represent diversity in our advertising and will continue to do so in the future.”
An advertisement (above) supposedly by Garofalo popped up on Reddit, but its legitimacy is unclear. A simple endorsement stating “Garofalo families are the ones that LOVE good pasta” has nevertheless appeared on the company’s official Facebook page and LGBT customers and allies are posting their support.

Barilla appeared on an Italian radio show earlier this week and said, “I would never do (a commercial) with a homosexual family, not for lack of respect but because we don’t agree with them,” we posted yesterday. “Ours is a classic family where the woman plays a fundamental role.” The brand is under boycott by pro-equality pasta customers in Italy and across the world.
