A Philadelphia institution, Giovanni’s Room, announce that it will be closing its doors after 38 years. The LGBT bookstore announced at a press conference that its last day will be May 17th. The owner, Ed Hermance, said that he plans on retiring and selling the two buildings that the bookstore occupies. Hermance blames big online retailers for the lack of profitability in owning a gay bookstore. “The government is allowing Amazon to tighten their fingers around the throats of the publishers and drive their retail competitors out of the business by clearly monopolistic methods,” he said. Beginning Wednesday, merchandise will be available at a %25 discount.
