The Danish Girl may be changing the hearts and minds of people around the globe on transgender issues and history, but Qatari won’t be getting to watch it as the country’s culture ministry deemed the film depraved. The movie, which stars Oscar-winning-actor Eddie Redmayne as the transgender Danish painter Lili Elbe, has been causing controversy in Qatar with viewers protesting the film’s subject. Theatergoers took to social media, and the government responded by banning the film from local cinemas. “We would like to inform you that we have contacted the concerned administration and the screening of the Danish film is now banned from cinemas,” the culture ministry wrote on Twitter. “We thank you for your unwavering vigilance.” [TheGuardian]
