If Mitt Romney is elected, he will repeal the federal mandate signed by President Obama that requires all hospitals participating in Medicaid and Medicare programs to permit patients to allow visitors of their choosing and prohibit discrimination in visitation based on a number of factors, including sexual orientation and gender identity. Romney believes that a decision like this should be up to the states to decide. Because visiting a lifelong partner, or if you’re the child of an unmarried same-sex couple, this is seen as a “privilege” and not a right.
“Governor Romney also believes that it should be left to states to decide whether to grant same-sex couples certain benefits, such as hospital visitation rights and the ability to adopt children,” Romney campaign adviser Bay Buchanan told Buzzfeed’s Chris Geidner. [HuffPo]
