San Francisco 49ers: First NFL Team to Publicly Support the Gay Community

With football season approaching, the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers become the first professional football team to publicly support of LGBT youth through a video for the It Gets Better Project. Speakers in the video include Ricky Jean Francois (Defensive Tackle), Isaac Sopoaga (Defensive Tackle), Donte Whitner (Safety), and Ahmad Brooks (Linebacker). The 49ers follow in the footsteps the San Francisco Giants, the first national sports team to participate in the project, according to the Examiner. The video was made possible after a San Francisco resident Sean Chapin launched a petition on asking the 49ers to step up and take a stand, in the same way he was able to persuade the SF Giants last year. Many other baseball teams followed suit including the Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, and Tampa Bay Rays. Hopefully, other football teams will join the San Francisco 49ers and show their support for LGBT youth in America.
