Santa Fe Mayor David Coss, who has a lesbian daughter, and Councilor Patti Bushee announced that they are both sponsoring a resolution to fully support gay and lesbian marriage in New Mexico and will encourage county clerks to issue same-sex marriage licenses to gay couples. New Mexico is one of two states that doesn’t specify gender when it comes to marriage—the other being New Jersey. The resolution will be introduced at the next city council meeting on Wednesday, March 27. According NBC: “Mayor David Coss and City Attorney Geno Zamora teamed up to examine that legal question and believe that nothing in the state constitution or statutes prevent county clerks from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Zamora issued a legal analysis of these findings, and the City Council is expected to vote on a resolution in support of Coss’ call on March 27.”

“Santa Fe is a city of respect, acceptance, and diversity that embraces all of our residents,” said Mayor David Coss. “I sponsored this resolution because all loving, committed couples should have the right to marry regardless of their sexual orientation.”
