As the Trump Administration continues to target the LGBTQ+ community, Seattle is reporting an ever-increasing influx of queer and trans Americans relocating to the city from red states, pushing the city to consider declaring a civil emergency to address mounting pressure on housing, healthcare, and social services.
The Seattle LGBTQ Commission submitted a letter to the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and Seattle Attorney’s Office on Trans Day of Visibility. The letter highlighted the fact that the city had been receiving transplants and refugees fleeing from states like Texas, Kansas, Florida, Tennessee, and Idaho as state legislators continue to restrict trans freedoms. In these states, trans folks have faced threats to personal safety, restrictions in healthcare and legal recognition.
The commission called the situation a form of “internal displacement” and claimed current emergency systems in place are not equipped to handle the effects. The letter urged that city officials declare a civil emergency, according to the Seattle Gay News. “Community-driven efforts alone are insufficient to mitigate this emergent issue,” the letter reads.
The letter also calls on the city to better coordinate across departments and with regional and state partners to support asylum seekers. It also asks that the city reaffirm its commitment to being “a place of safety, dignity, and belonging for those seeking refuge with more than symbolic language or gestures.”
PinkNews reports advocates, nonprofits, and organizations are already struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for emergency financial aid, housing support, transportation, legal assistance, and gender-affirming healthcare. In a state of civil emergency, Seattle would have access to additional city funding to help address the needs of the displaced population of queer and trans folks.
In the U.S. the quality of life for trans folks and the broader LGBTQ+ community continues to worsen. The commission’s letter also referenced data from the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security’s most recent “Red Flag Alert #3.” The alert indicates that “2025 was the sixth consecutive record-breaking year for the number of anti-trans bills considered across the country.” The country saw a 45% increase in anti-trans bills between 2024 and 2025, and a 668% increase in the number of bills in consideration.
