Public opinion on keeping orcas in captivity has grown increasingly negative after a battery of investigations (including the documentary Blackfish), and as a result, SeaWorld’s sales and attendance plummeted.
Finally, it appears that the amusement park company is listening to the public (and in some cases judges) and has announced that the current killer whale population within their parks will be their last.
“Why the big news? SeaWorld has been listening and we’re changing. Society is changing and we’re changing with it,” the company said. “SeaWorld is finding new ways to continue to deliver on our purpose to inspire all our guest(s) to take action to protect wild animals and wild places.” [CNN]
