The Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras of Sydney, Australia has decided it will take out “gay and lesbian” in its name. The festival now will simply be called Sydney Mardi Gras, which has caused a bit of outrage from the LGBT community. Strangely, the organization that runs the entire event, New Sydney Mardi Gras, changed the organization’s name to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. The sense in all of this? Beats us.
Many are unhappy with this change, though most of it is due to the parade’s increasingly hetero-shifting crowd. As result of this, Mardi Gras has begun to lose its alterna-identity that has attracted LGBT travelers from the world over. And now, the name change only further straight-washes the event. Though, it’s not all doom and gloom for the community. The straight-heavy crowd may signify a changing Sydney, a more tolerant and accepting Sydney.
So, what are the reasons for the name change? Mardi Gras of Sydney said that calling the event “gay and lesbian” excludes bisexuals, transgender, intersex, etc, while putting them all in makes the name too long. [ABC]
