A teacher at West Alexander Middle School has been suspended after showing the Top 40 hit “Same Love” video to her class. The North Carolina school’s Superintendent said that the video was “outside the bounds of the curriculum” and “inappropriate.” The superintendent is a minority in his opinions as the video just recently won an MTV VMA award for “Best Video with a Social Message.” The teacher is said to be back in school this week. This isn’t the first time a teacher received disciplinary action for showcasing the song in a classroom. Last year, a Michigan teacher was suspended without pay for playing the song as per a request from one of her students. In the Michigan case, which was ultimately reversed thanks to the help of the ACLU, Macklemore responded by saying: “This incident … exposed a latent homophobia, preventing safe space for all young people to feel confident in being themselves. It’s clear that Ms. Johnson felt bullying and ‘gay bashing’ were issues that needed to be addressed, and by doing so, was punished.”
We posted the video after the jump to remind everyone just how
offensive beautiful the video is.
