It is no secret that young LGBT youth’s are often harassed by their teammates in and outside of the locker room. These young adults find it hard accepting their sexual identity when their athletic role models are caught using the same homophobic language and anti-gay hate speech as their classmates. Sadly, it is not uncommon for professional athletes to behave in this manner on and off the court. That is why star athletes such as “Bam Bam” Meulens of the SF Giants, former running back Tiki Barber for the NY Giants, and other professionals are speaking openly against homophobia on IN THE LIFE. This July, IN THE LIFE  will ask these athletes and several others to discuss the importance of ending homophobia in the world of sports.  During this episode, high school track runner, Jacob Gardner, talks about the significance of professional athletes supporting LGBT youth’s. “It’s a lot to ask, but coming out is the best thing you can do for kids,” says Gardner.” “There are kids who look up to professional sports and when they don’t see anyone who is out it’s hard for them to imagine themselves there.”
