A stamp in Finland that celebrates the life of the late artist Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) has become the country’s best-selling stamp, thanks to overseas orders. The country released the commemorative stamps on Monday, and it has been ordered by people from over 178 countries (good thing their the post office, we’d hate to see the shipping cost on that!). ‘We haven’t seen this kind of interest before in Posti’s history and we probably won’t again soon,’ Posti Development Chief Markku Penttinen said. “His emphatically masculine homoerotic drawings have attained iconic status in their genre and had an influence on, for instance, pop culture and fashion. In his works, Tom of Finland utilized the self-irony and humor typical of subcultures. The drawings on the stamp sheet represent strong and confident male figures typical of their designer,” the post office said of the homoerotic artist’s work that they chose to highlight. [GSN]
We wonder if the surprise interest in the stamp will spark a renewed interest by other post offices around the globe to issue more risque stamps to help boost revenue in the digital era?
