Watch: UN Free & Equal Bollywood Campaign Video has been Seen by One Million People

In a symbolic gesture, the United Nations Free & Equal campaign  released a music video starring actress and former Miss India Celina Jaitly, a few months ago. And now, the video has been seen by over one million people. In the video, Jaitly is shown performing a cover of a classic Bollywood song, “Uthe Sab Ke Kadam.” The video is done in a typical Bollywood style,  with a fun and whimsical tone. Like many Bollywood movies, the music video tells the story of a newly engaged couple; the twist, however, is that the couple is same-sex (pictured above).

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay commented on the video and said she was delighted to see the Free & Equal campaign taking a moment to specifically address India.

“LGBT people have historically been marginalized and subjected to discrimination and violence in India, as elsewhere. But change is coming. In the past few months we have seen an unprecedented level of public debate relating to the rights of LGBT people. As awareness grows, attitudes will change. We need to do all we can to hasten change by challenging the myths and misinformation that get in the way of understanding. That is what this campaign is all about.”
