While the rest of the world works tirelessly to protect our planet for future generations, Trump has decided to take another step in hurting and encouraging the destruction of our environment. Yesterday, on his way back from talks in Asia, threats of North Korea, numerous shootings, and a Russia scandal, he decided to lift a 2014 Obama-era ban on importing heads of elephants into the United States from Zimbabwe and Zambia. It is also probably no coincidence that this law irked the Trump family as it is well known that his sons are trophy hunters.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service made the announcement official in a statement: “Legal, well-regulated sport hunting as part of a sound management program can benefit the conservation of certain species by providing incentives to local communities to conserve the species and by putting much-needed revenue back into conservation,”
While many argue that hunting in designated areas of Africa helps maintain healthy populations, the elephant is still listed as a threatened species since 1978.
By encouraging trophy hunting, we are also encouraging and normalizing illegal poaching of elephants who are often massacred for their ivory.
This holiday season, consider donating to the WWF and help protect our planet’s animals.
