Going against Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws, the US embassy in Moscow will screen the gay-themed drama I Am Michael. The film has been added to the Amfest film festival, September 16-27. The US Embassy in Russia is the main sponsor of the festival, which will highlight American independent films.

The movie, which stars Zachary Quinto and James Franco as a gay couple, is based Benoit Denizet-Lewis’ New York Times Magazine article “My Ex-Gay Friend.” The controversial article is about Michael Glatze who becomes an ex-gay and a Christian pastor.

The Hollywood Reporter called the decision to show the movie as a “direct move to protest Russia’s anti-gay laws.”
