While almost every major poll shows that Americans overwhelming support background checks on firearms sales, the United States Senate did the country a disservice by defeating a compromise proposal that would have required background checks for those interested in purchasing a firearm. Despite the proposal being formed by both the GOP and Democrats and with backing from President Obama, a fierce campaign from the National Rifle Association influenced enough staunch republicans and democrats from pro-gun states to vote to defeat the bill, which, in addition to background checks, would have made tougher laws on gun trafficking and straw purchases, and steps to improve safety in schools in the wake of the Newtown massacre.
