A federal judge has ordered Utah to officially recognize more than 1,000 same-sex marriages that took place in a brief window before the US Supreme Court issued an emergency stay. According to the AP: “If the rulings stands after a 21-day hold the judge placed on it, the state would be required to lift its freeze on benefits requested by gay couples.” The ACLU filed a lawsuit on behalf of four couples who said that the freeze on benefits for the legally married couples clearly violated their rights. US District Judge Dale Kimball ruled that Utah’s freeze on benefits was unacceptable. “These legal uncertainties and lost rights cause harm each day that the marriage is not recognized,” Kimball wrote.
