Washington D.C. Launches Transgender Respect Ads

As a result of increased hate crimes against Washington D.C.’s transgender community, The government has launched a series of ads that hope to ‘normalize’ the trans community. Each ad will show a different transgender person and give a glimpse into their lives, which the government says will work to promote “respect for the District’s transgender and gender-non-conforming communities.” The first ad introduces us to Kisha who loves “wandering through Smithsonian museums, eating on H Street with friends, and going to shows at Howard Theatre.” And it concludes by saying: “I’m a transgender woman and I’m part of DC. Please treat me the way any woman would want to be treated: with courtesy and respect.” The D.C. Office of Human Rights has also launched a Facebook page that gives info on transgender people’s rights and resources for the community.
