The LGBT community wanted to make sure Mike Pence received a warm welcome-the-neighborhood welcome. In addition to being greeted by Chevy Chase homeowners’ rainbow flags, the LGBT community also arranged arranged a massive dance party. The vice president-elect is famously anti-gay (being against same-sex marriage, against the repeal of DADT, allowing legal discrimination in Indiana, and his support of gay-conversion therapy), so the LGBT community wanted to make sure that Pence and his family know they are in liberal, tolerant, and LGBT-friendly Washington D.C. (only 9% of voters in Chevy Chase voted for Trump).
The queer dance party saw hundreds of men, women, drag queens, and children dancing through the idyllic neighborhood. Beyonce played, rainbow flags were waved, families cheered and danced, and the attendants showed that dancing and being who you are is exactly what America is about. It also sent a warning to Pence that his administration is surrounded by those who appreciate liberal ideologies and personal freedoms.
“The idea is to leave a mark that Mike Pence will never forget,” protestor organizer Firas Nasr told the Washington Post. “We want to send a strong message to Pence that we’re a united queer community.”’
