With a new president who has publicly spoken in favor of gay and lesbian marriage, trans rights, and anti-discrimination laws, Chile has a woman in power who’s ready to make some major changes for the LGBT community. President Michelle Bachelet, who took office in on March 11, won 62% of the vote in Chile and openly courted LGBT voters with the promise of full equality. During the campaign Bachelet said: “Marriage equality, I believe we have to make it happen.” In addition to marriage equality, Bachelet also supports a bill that would allow transgender Chileans to legally change their names without surgery, hormone treatments, or psychiatric evaluations. Additionally, she wants to strengthen the country’s existing anti-discrimination/hate-crime legislation.
