Size-four sandals, miniature cocktail dresses, pink nail polish, and an array of Disney princesses. Sounds like every little girl’s dream camp.  This stash of summertime goodies, isn’t for biological girls, though, at the “You Are You” camp.  This four-day getaway is not just a place for glitz and glamor, but acts as a safe haven for young boys to dress in any way they choose without judgment. For the past three years parents and their children have attended this camp to give their kids an environment in which they can freely express themselves. During their stay, these excited little campers come together to put on a talent show and a fashion runway. Some of the boys spend months prior to the camp preparing for the show and even create their own gowns. Photographer Lindsay Morris has been, with the permission of their parents, documenting the lives of these young gender nonconforming boys during their time at You Are You. “[The kids] don’t have to look over their shoulders, and they can let down their guard. Those are four days when none of that matter, and they are surrounded by family members who support them,” said Morris. Morris hopes to eventually publish a book of her work along with a multimedia show that would bring new light to the LGBT community. With the exposure she would like to raise funds for children who cannot afford to attend the camp. As for the young boys Morris is documenting now, she would love to continue to see what they do in the future. “I would really love to follow the kids into adulthood and see what kind of relationships they develop,” Morris said. “I want to witness the evolution, knowing from where they started and see how life is going to play out for them—hopefully happily—and I think they’re going to have a better transition into adulthood than the generation proceeding them.” [Slate]
