Two human rights advocacy organizations, Rights4Girls and The California Endowment, have called upon news directors and style editors for a change in nomenclature regarding victims of the sex trade. The two groups point out that girls who are “lured or abducted by pimps outside schools or at malls,” whose average age is somewhere between 12-14, are not “child prostitutes.”

They point out that the term “prostitute implies consent or choice,” but in actuality, these girls are victims of rape. “There is no such thing as a child prostitute,” said Malika Saada Saar, executive director of Rights4Girls. “Sex with underage girls is rape, not prostitution.” In lieu of this term, the organizations suggest the more accurate terms “sex-trafficked child” or “child who is a victim of commercial sex abuse.”
