In 1999, a new film made its way around the festival circuit. It redefined what LGBTQ characters could be. And it had critics hailing its wit and humor. Before But I’m a Cheerleader, gay characters were often only seen in a negative light. Then, suddenly, this film showed queer characters as lovable, innocent protagonists.
The film was also hysterically funny, with outstanding performances from stars Natasha Lyonne and Clea Duvall, as well as supporting actors like RuPaul, Mink Stole, and even Michelle Williams.
The movie had its theatrical release in 2000, and now, 20 years later, the anniversary is being celebrated with a 4K Ultra-HD digital Director’s Cut being released on December 8th (making it a perfect gift for any film buff on your Christmas list.)
Director Jamie Babbit said, “I uncovered some amazing lost scenes that I wasn’t able to include in the original film and am so happy to see them added back into this cut. This film is so special to me and I can’t wait for everyone to fall in love with it all over again!”
On top of the never-before-seen additional footage, the special Director’s Cut is also loaded with extra features like a making-of featurette, audio commentary, and even a “Class Reunion” special, which sees the cast reunited for the first time in twenty years!
The 20th Anniversary Director’s Cut of But I’m a Cheerleader will be released on December 8th.
