Will Sarah McBride Become The First Trans Member Of Congress?

State Senator Sarah McBride from Delaware is inching closer to becoming the first trans member of Congress after winning the primary for the only Delaware state seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. McBride won the Democratic primary by a landslide last week beating her competitors, including Earl Cooper and Elias Weir according to NBC.

McBride first came onto the scene with her historic November 2020 win, when she became the first transgender state senator, beating out Republican candidate Steve Washington to represent Delaware’s 1st Senate District. This win puts McBride on track to win the general election that will replace Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester.

“While tonight we celebrate our victory in the primary, we all know that our work is far from over, and we know what is at stake in this election,” McBride said at her election win celebration in New Castle. “We know what is on the line with the MAGA extremists who are on our ballot here in November in Delaware. We know what happens if Donald Trump wins and Republicans get full control of Congress. They will not hesitate one second to pass their Project 2025 agenda.”

McBride is a born and raised Delaware resident who grew up in Wilmington, and graduated from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts as well as American University. According to Delaware state’s official site, she has been involved in community advocacy for a majority of her life. Not only did she worked for the former Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, and the late attorney general Beau Biden, she also worked in the White House as an intern during the Obama Administration. Most recently, McBride fought to pass a landmark non-discrimination law in her home state and has worked with state legislators to expand Medicaid coverage and protect youth from child abuse.

“My heart is filled with hope and gratitude, I’m grateful, I’m hopeful and I’m motivated,” she told AP News.
