Earlier this year, it was announced that Hulu is rebooting the horror cult classic, Hellraiser. Originally released in 1987, the movie was written and directed by LGBTQ filmmaker, Clive Barker, who adapted it from his novella, The Hellbound Heart. The story tells the tale of the Cenobites, a group of multidimensional beings who blend together pleasure and pain, usually leading to disastrous consequences to whomever they encounter.
The story is inherently queer, as it was inspired by Barker’s youth spent as a male hustler, and also his visits to BDSM bars, where he saw both pleasure and pain being interwoven for sexual gratification.
Hulu’s reboot, which is scheduled to release next year, has Barker on as producer and has revealed that the new Pinhead (the lead Cenobite) will be played by trans actress, Jamie Clayton, famous for shows such as Sense8 and Designated Survivor.

Clayton celebrated the news by sharing an image on Instagram of her holding the Lament Configuration, a vital prop in the Hellraiser movies. In the films, the device is a type of puzzle that’s used to summon the Cenobites.
According to Decider, Clive Barker stated, “Having seen some of the designs from David Bruckner’s new Hellraiser film, they pay homage to what the first film created, but then take it to places it’s never been before. This is a Hellraiser on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honor the original even as they revolutionize it for a new generation.”
Hulu’s reboot of Hellraiser is set to premiere next year to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Barker’s original 1987 film.
