The mayor of the small town, Cedar Falls, Iowa has recently rescinded his decision to reject a proposal that would recognize the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the town.
According to reports from the Advocate, mayor Rob Green originally cited his Christian values as a reason for rejecting the proposal, but soon after he reconsidered when members of the town voiced concern and fear for living in an anti-LGBTQ+ community.
The proclamation that would recognize June as the official Pride Month of Cedar Falls was proposed by the Human Rights Commission of Cedar Falls in March, and after being struck down, politicians, public officials and citizens alike took to social media to criticize the mayor’s decision.
On May 1st, Cedar Falls held a city council meeting where residents showed up in person to speak their minds. One resident told the mayor: “I do not think that your Christian Faith should be on the table with your public duties. If it gets in the way, you do not belong in the mayor’s office.”
Eventually, Green signed the proclamation stating “We don’t have to agree in order to love each other and to try to understand each other.” Some were not satisfied with this solution and called for the mayor to resign, but the LGBTQ+ community in the town celebrates this win as June approaches.
