Arrival of Olympic Athletes in London Causes Gay-Dating App to Crash

A gay dating website called Grindr crashed within minutes of the arrival of the Olympic athletes in East London, which is where the athletes are staying. This application allows gay men to locate each other within the same region. A Grindr user from London who noticed the crash commented, “It happened almost as soon as the teams got here. Either loads of athletes were logging on to meet fellow Olympians or were looking to bag a local.” Though only 20 athletes competing in the Olympics have come out, it seems like a little more than a coincidence that the application couldn’t handle the high demand that appeared within minutes of the arrival of the first Olympic athletes. The site was restored approximately 24 hours after the crash and the founder Joel Samkai apologized publicly, “I know it was frustrating. I was frustrated myself. I also rely on Grindr in my day-to-day personal life. It made me feel disconnected.” [Mirror]
