Following a coup in May, the new military government’s hand-picked panel has begun work on the country’s new constitution this week, and among the many changes, it will protect the LGBT community. In the draft, it recognizes a “third gender” and will offer protection for all sexual identities and equal treatment under the law, according to a panel spokesperson. “We are putting the words ‘third gender’ in the constitution because Thai society has advanced,” the spokesperson added. The final version of the new constitution will still need to be approved by the ruling junta.
