On Friday, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley retired leaving openly gay Eric Fanning as the Air Force’s acting secretary. Until President Obama announces a replacement for Donley, Fanning will assume the responsibilities of the position making him the highest-ranking openly gay person in the Defense Department. Fanning who was appointed undersecretary of the Air Force in April has a history in the gay and lesbian community. He served from 2004-2007 as a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and even discussed his hopes that the military will repeal DADT telling the Washington Blade: “Speaking personally, I always think it’s important to have non-discrimination policies codified to include everyone…The military, because it has a chain of command, has a different attitude about this and a different way to try to go about protecting airmen, sailors, soldiers, Marines—but Eric Fanning? Yes. I personally like to see these things in writing and codified.” [HuffPo]
