Fundraising Begins in Chicago to Build Monument to LGBT People

The Chicago Chapter of the American Veterans for Equal Rights is hoping to raise $20,000 to build a monument to the city’s LGBT veterans. The black granite piece with a pink granite triangle will be, if enough money is raised, will be installed in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in May. The monument will also have the seals of the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines and include the inscription: “Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people have served honorably and admirably in America’s armed forces. In their memory and appreciation of their selfless service and sacrifice, this monument was dedicated by Chicago Chapter American Veterans for Equal Rights ‘AVER’ ( … with liberty and justice for all ).”
