Gay President for Ireland?

David Norris via Towleroad

David Norris, the first openly gay Irish senator known for his strong advocacy for LGBT rights could soon be Ireland’s first openly gay president. Norris (surprisingly) secured the Labour Party’s nomination to run for the presidency. The October 27 election will have a record seven candidates. It wasn’t an easy road for Norris to get this far. In August of this year, Norris pulled out of the race when it was brought to the media’s attention that he had asked for clemency for Ezra Yitzhak Nawi, his former Israeli partner who was convicted of statutory rape in 1992 of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy. When this was discovered his campaign suffered a heavy blow, but support once again grew and the senator made what he is calling “a miraculous comeback.” He is now considered to be the frontrunner.
