Ireland’s President Refuses to Take Part in NYC’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade Because of Ban on Gay Marchers

The largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the United States, the one in New York City, has had a long-standing ban on LGBT marchers parading under their own banner. When Irish President Mary McAleese was asked to be this year’s grand marshal of the 250th Annual Parade, she turned down the request. Most US politicians march in both the all-inclusive Queen’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and then march in the 5th Ave. one. When this was offered as a suggestion, McAleese said she couldn’t remain in the United States for that long. This comes as a major blow to parade organizers. While considered a conservative when she came into office, McAleese has become an advocate for marginalized groups in Irish society. [IrishCentral] [JMG]
