Actor Georg Uecker, one of Germany’s frontrunners for gay visibility, has come out as HIV positive in a new interview.
Uecker plays the openly gay Dr. Carsten Flöter on Lindenstrasse, Germany’s crown jewel of daytime soaps. As of late, speculation concerning the actor’s health has run rampant, after a producer on the show disclosed that the actor was ill.
To clear the air, Uecker disclosed his HIV-positive status in an interview with Schwilissimo, a gay German magazine.
“Fact is, and I never made a secret out of it, I’m HIV positive,” Uecker proclaimed.
“But I am doing very well, thanks to the pharma industry and an on all accounts positive approach to life.”
The actor revealed that while he’s known his status for some 25 years, he likely contracted the virus just shy of 30 years ago. These days, under a successful anti-retroviral therapy, Uecker says he’s doing just fine.
“Today, I’m constantly undetectable, really fit and absolutely determined to become a shrill old man.”
