National Geographic is kicking off the new year with a welcoming surprise. The century-plus-old magazine will feature their first transgender child on the cover. Nine-year-old Very Jackson, who became famous when Transgender House was painted outside of the Westboro Baptist Church by Planting Peace. Jackson helped raise the funds needed to create a transgender safe space.
“The best thing about being a girl is, now I don’t have to pretend to be a boy,” the cover quote reads with the title “Gender Revolution.”
Avery Jackson is the child on the cover, the inspiration for Transgender House opposite the Westboro Baptist Church.
The issue hits newsstands at the end of December, right before National Geographic channel releases a two-hour documentary also titled “Gender Revolution.”
Jackson’s mom took to Twitter to express her disbelief:
@natgeomag I’m shaking so much I can barely type. Thank you for featuring Avery! #transisbeautiful pic.twitter.com/R1FAw6ayBH
